'Gary' Gets Name Change

CBS has changed the name of its upcoming Jay Mohr sitcom.

When the network unveiled the show to advertisers in May, it was called "Project Gary." But according to a brief spot the network ran Thursday during the premiere of "Greatest American Dog," the series has been retitled "Gary Unmarried."

"Gary" isn't the only fall rookie that's gotten a title makeover since May. The CW's "Surviving the Filthy Rich" now is being hyped as "Privileged."

While I can really see the need to rename StFR into something more ... easily buzzed, I really do not understand the thinking behind CBS renaming Project Gary into a name that is incredibly difficult to roll of the tongue.

Next we'll hear ''In a related story, CBS has dropped the C in their initials..."

Melissa:

Regarding/in response Jericho's comment (about the name change from "Project Gary" to "Gary unmarried"). I'm sorry, but I MUST have misunderstood you - and please, I'm VERY seriously NOT trying to be mean or offensive, but rather, I guess I am (sincerely) just plain confused -
are you saying that the new/changed sitcom title: "Gary Unmarried" does NOT "roll off the tongue", as I believe you put it? This new title consists of two rather small words that RHYME - how much MORE could you possibly want from those 2 little words in order for them to "roll off the tongue"?? Again, I am REALLY not trying to be a B**** here, just trying to figure out if I missed or misunderstood something.

Tim Doyle:

Yeager blows.

jared:

Project Gary... Gary Unmarried. In a couple weeks after cancellation, it will all be meaningless anyway.

Max:

Regarding Melissa's response to Jericho:
"Gary" and "Unmarried" do not rhyme. They're similar, but I think they just make the title sound clunky.

I liked Project Gary as a title, but it won't really matter. Shows like this don't generally get a chance to do anything but fail.

Perhaps they could retitle it again, something like "Project: Cripple the Show before it even Airs by playing Musical Chairs with the Freaking Title.

ChipL:

The trouble with the new title doesn't end with the fact that "Gary" and "unmarried" don't rhyme (which they don't).

If this show were an enormous hit, eventually "Gary" would have to get "married." (That's what happens on TV sitcoms, and it's not like the star is 22 years old.) What, are they gonna change the name in Season Five to "Gary Married"? That title's even worse.

The fact is, "Project Gary" was a title with legs. Or at least longer legs than "Gary Unmarried."

The show is doomed.
