NBC Sports Makes Deals for More Swimming Coverage

NBC Sports has made an agreement with USA Swimming to broadcast the 2009 World Swimming Championships and 2009 USA Swimming National Championships on NBC Sports and Universal Sports. NBC also will broadcast the National Championships in 2010 and 2011.

NBC will feature weekend coverage from the 2009 World Swimming Championships in Rome on July 26 and Aug. 1-2, 2009. In addition, midweek coverage will air on the newly launched Universal Sports digital channel.

NBC averaged 30 million viewers during the first eight days of the Beijing Games, thanks in part to its coverage of swimming, particularly Michael Phelps.

"The whole world watched as Michael Phelps took his sport to a new level and introduced a generation of fans to swimming through his extraordinary achievements. His accomplishments transcend sports and are, in fact, a cultural phenomenon. We're greatly looking forward to following the next chapter in his career,” Dick Ebersol, chairman of NBC Universal Sports & Olympics, said in a statement.

NBC already has the broadcast rights to the 2012 U.S. Olympics Swimming Trials and 2012 London Olympic Games.

Tell Rowdy Gaines that Chad La Tourette recently (last week) swam a 14:53.77 in the 1500 Meters at the World University Games. Chad and Petr Vanderkay are the two best we have in distance swimming. Chad's time in Number 1 by an American this year and, up to date, among the top five in the World. I thought this would be of interest when covering tonight's events for tomorrows broadcast.
