"Pushing Daisies" may be close to pushing daisies.
According to industry sources familiar with the situation, ABC has decided not to produce any more episodes of the critically beloved show this season. Word of the show's apparent death began spreading around Hollywood Thursday morning, though an ABC spokeswoman insisted no decision has been made on the show's fate.
Under one scenario making the rounds, ABC might find a way to extend the options on the "Daisies" cast and crew for several months so that the show could be revived next season. But such a plan would be costly.
Producer Warner Bros. TV had no comment.
"Daisies" wraps production on its 13-episode fall order today. A decision to end the show has been expected for some time now, but it nonetheless represents a stunning reversal of fortune for the Warner Bros. Television-produced fantasy drama.
"Daisies" got a major promotional push from ABC a year ago as the network sought to launch a new Wednesday night. "Daisies" anchored the lineup at 8 p.m., and the combination of strong marketing and glowing reviews helped "Daisies" premiere to unexpectedly solid numbers.
While the show's ratings trended downward after its premiere, "Daisies" nonetheless did well during the fall, scoring a full-season pickup just weeks after its fall 2007 premiere. But then came the writers' strike.
Whatever momentum the show had was killed by the work stoppage, and when the strike was over, ABC made the decision not to bring the show back in the spring. Only nine episodes aired during the show's first season, and viewers had to wait more than nine months for the second season.
Despite another strong promo push, the second season of "Daisies" premiered to far lower ratings than the first.
Earlier this week, "Daisies" creator Bryan Fuller said he plans to wrap up the show's storylines via a comic book.

ABC is making a terrible mistake by cancelling this show. They've got something wonderful and they need to figure out a way to make it work or grow in a new time slot. What a shame.

Via a comic book? WTH? At least they could do the wrap up in the last episode.. grrrr! TV execs mystify me.
I love this show and am amazed that there were only 9 shows last season. It's one of those series that feels like it's been on forever.
However, I will say that this season I'm feeling more antsy to push the story forward a little.. there's only so much longing that I as a viewer can take... maybe too much longing by too many characters doesn't make viewers want to return especially in this era of fast courtships on shows.
I'm still watching it but have to admit that I just started watching this seasons episodes on my dvr... and I'm a pretty loyal viewer to the show.
First, My Own Worst Enemy and now this. Ack.

ABC seems to have a tendency to cancel good shows, such as 'Daisies' or 'Sports Night' for another night of 'Who wants to be a Millionaire.' I thought I wouldn't go back to ABC, but I did for Daisies, now I'm not sure if I trust them to keep good shows anymore.

PD is an unbearably twee show, and the story about the third season appears to be completely made up by a fansite.

It's not the strike that inflicted PD's mortal wound, it's this season's inferior storyline that scared off the viewers. No viewers = No profits, so PD gets the chop. There are many more shows that deserve cancellation, but PD's rightful cause is right there on the screen.

Canceling Pushing Daisies would be a big mistake!

I love this show. One of the most creative in years. It's like a live action Dr. Seuss story, allowing one to escape for an hour before returning to the reality of this crazy world we're in right now.
I understand the ratings realities, but I only wish they could find a way to stay patient with it. I can't take any more police and legal dramas. Along with Ugly Betty, this is one of the few series to take me out of that mix.
Posted by ned | November 13, 2008 5:49 PM
Please don't cancel this show!! It is so different from everything else on TV. ABC already has cancelled numerous series they promoted almost to death. I think people feel this show is refreshing and it makes them happy other than watching crime victim or sex scandalous shows. If it is cancelled I will never get into another ABC series for fear of losing it again....Six Degrees ring a bell?

This is why I DVR everything , I will never ever watch a commercial especially on channel 7 as they continue to do a horrible job..other then Lost they could go off the air for most of the week and I wouldn't even notice.

I'm seriously upset that they canceled the show. It's smart, it's intriguing, and has lovable characters -- what's the problem? Sell it a little! I'm so sick of seeing commercials for Grey's Anatomy and Dancing with the Stars, have some for Pushing Daisies! TV viewers deserve at least one intelligent program instead of this myriad of senseless violence and sex
Posted by Colleen | November 13, 2008 6:42 PM
ABC you are making a big mistake if you cancel!
I love this show and frankly I am freakin sick and tired of "reality tv." Finally an amazing show has come to light and now its getting the axe without giving it the full run it desrves.
SHAME ON YOU!!!
I knew there was a reason why I stopped watching you.

I fell in love with this show the minute it first appeared. The writing is clever and fun. I marvel at the dialog and the delivery of each actor. Give it another chance and do promote it more. It is such a delight. I am a LOST fan as well and have loved Boston Legal too. All different shows with a little edge and substance. Reality Bites!!!!!
Posted by Dee | November 13, 2008 7:42 PM
Pushing Daisies was actually fun last season, but this season never worked, I have no idea why! I stopped watching.
Posted by Ron Ozer | November 13, 2008 9:17 PM
i love it but i'm not surprised. the ratings have been horrible since it came back. i was hoping they would either move it to another night (maybe sundays at 8???) or at least let it play on Weds at 8 side by side with new eps of Lost when that starts up its new season in January. (You do know that the return of Lost will automatically bump up the ratings a notch for whatever runs before it.)
either way this is a show that ABC should be making some effort to save...but ratings wise...any other show pulled the ratings the show did this season, they'd already be gone. (by which i mean last place finish week in week out)

Don't Go! Please don't go! Pushing Daisies is by far the best show on TV; artistic, intelligent, culturally interesting. Nothing else on TV inspires me to laugh as much, and feel so contentedly happy and satisfied at the end of the show. Be a big boy, I mean, a group of big boys, be strong and support a good thing longer. No more drek.
Posted by stephanie | November 13, 2008 9:56 PM
Aw, I love Pushing Daisies! I wish this season would leave the "we can't have sex, we're longing for each other" alone and not push it so much. That's a storyline that's been done to death a million times over. Olive at the nunnery was funny and a good start. Let this show figure out where it wants to go without suffocating it, NBC, and you'll have a huge hit on your hands for years to come (oh, and promote it).

This is probably the only show I ever watch television for anymore. When I saw this headline, I literally wanted to CRY. THIS SHOW IS AMAZING; IT'S SO REFRESHING, SO CLEVER, SO INTRICATELY WRITTEN. I can't compare it to anything else, PLEASE KEEP IT ALIVE!!!! A comic book cannot capture the imagery or emotions expressed through the show.
Posted by cfu | November 13, 2008 10:40 PM
Actually, it really isn't a good fit for ABC. I watched it only a few times and didn't care for it. I really saw this being next to KyleXY on ABC Family, instead of ABC-TV.
To me, it seemed alittle too "WB" or "CW" to be mainstream.
I'm not at all surprised. Actually kinda glad it is possibly going away. I'm definitely not in the "tweenie" demo, which is what it appears to be aimed at. Let CW or ABCFamily have the show, in my opionion.
Also, 9 eps,. then 13 eps... would BBC use it? those are normal seasons over in the EU. Maybe ITV... i wonder if Rupert could us it on SKYTEL???
Posted by EmmGee-Ohio | November 14, 2008 3:17 AM
A show that received so many high profile nominations and awards get cancelled because ABC can't get their acts together. Clearly, the writers strike didn't help the show (like so many others) either. It's a shame and it shows again that money and not good taste rules the world. As long the top people at ABC raking the cash ...
It's just a disaster and so, so sad ...
Posted by Andrea | November 14, 2008 5:54 AM
How stupid is ABC? Cancelling PD will ensure that Bryan Fuller goes back to work for NBC on Heroes - a show that's been failing ever since he left the writing team. Wouldn't it be a lot smarter to keep him in their stable - at least till the competition's favorite show bites the dust?
Posted by Maddy | November 14, 2008 5:56 AM
Since ABC picked up Scrubs, maybe NBC can cancel Knight Rider and pick up Pushing Daisies.
Posted by Joe | November 14, 2008 5:57 AM
I love Bryan Fuller's shows. Wonderfalls, Dead Like Me, and now Pushing Daisies. All canceled much too soon. If there was a way to by-pass television networks and get his shows out via the Internet or straight-to-DVD, I think the shows would all have done much better. I hope I get to see the rest of the shows that were filmed for this season. So disappointed, but not surprised. Oh, and I'm definitely not a tween.
Posted by Lisa | November 14, 2008 6:01 AM
This should not come as any big surprise to any of us. The networks have always put on great shows with intriguing storylines and great casts only to cancel them as soon as possible. They should just stick with what they are best at, reality shows and other brain dead programs and let those of us who care about quality programming continue our move from broadcast TV to the cable and satellite channels. Bye bye ABC and good riddance.
Posted by Tim | November 14, 2008 7:19 AM
Does this news really surprise anyone....the networks have canceled more good shows than i can count. Im sure they will replace it with a retread piece of garbage-- ABC is worthless and like someone else said...i hadnt watched them in years until PD....if its gone so am i--
Its just like the movies.....no room for exciting new ideas....just boring and unimaginative sequels and remakes--- I bet they want to make room for another CSI copy or Greys Anatomy spin off....
PATHETIC

Posted by thisshowisdumb | November 14, 2008 8:18 AM
It's a bit frustrating when a network cancels a good show with a dangling storylines. I suspect a lot of the reason for the weakness this season is that viewers lost momentum during the extended hiatus (that was the case for me). If they do decide to cancel it, I hope they bring it to a suitable closure, perhaps by producing one or two episodes designed to bring the series to a close. Doing so probably also would help DVD sales.
Posted by Scott | November 14, 2008 8:27 AM
This makes me so unbelievably sad. I love the show, the cast, the set decoration, it's the only thing like it on TV!
And here I just saw a promo on ABC for The Super Nanny and now The Super Manny. What the f$%k!
I'm going back to reading books. I can't take the TV programming-disappointment and dumbing down of our country via reality TV.
Posted by The Curateur | November 14, 2008 9:09 AM
It's a good show and would have more viewers if
a. they promoted it more and
b. if they didn't compete with "Bones", another great show.
Posted by Tim | November 14, 2008 12:53 PM
Let's face it, the 8 p.m. hour is down across the board. This is one of the best shows on television, bar none, and deserves a chance to redeem itself in the ratings. No doubt a move to 9 p.m. would do the trick.
How many shows - from "Seinfeld" to "The X-Files" to "30 Rock" have rebounded from ratings woes to become network-making programs? NBC and FOX gave these programs time and space, and they became both critical and financial successes.
Come on, ABC. Stand up for the little guy, and back your most interesting, most creative skein.

This is a great show! For this show to be axed would really be sinful for the ABC network. We were even able to convert our son, a theater stage manager, to be a "Pushing Daisies" advocate!
This is a very unique and well produced show for the ABC network. The show appeals to many different demographics. The stories are fanciful and the characters are people you actually want to root for in every episode. That is rare in television these days.
Posted by Debra Anders | November 14, 2008 3:01 PM
Don't blame the poor ratings on the Writers' Strike. Blame them on the network for NOT promoting PD at all DURING the Writers' Strike. First season episodes of Chuck, another fun and intelligent WB-produced show, were shown on FX or SciFi (I forget which) during the strike/hiatus, as well as lots of network promos for it. ABC gave up on PD a year ago! Yes, it's a costly show to produce. But, for pete's sake, get rid of some other shows that pander to the Jerry Springer crowd and put your money into this pot of gold!
Also, Pushing Daisies is not for "tweens." It's for INTELLIGENT adults young and old who appreciate a good laugh.
Posted by Cactusflower | November 14, 2008 3:21 PM
I'd watch Pushing Daisies every week if it weren't being edged out by post-election coverage and the lousy CMA awards. I gather that the -production values of this show are probably steep, but COME ON... Maybe spend some money on something worthwhile, and stop peddling dumb filler TV. The last thing anyone I know needs is a dose of "reality".

I am heartbroken by this. PD is the best show on TV, period. What happened to the time when networks actually allowed quality TV shows to find an audience ala "Cheers" and Hill Street Blues".
Next up on ABC: Dancing with Supernannies.
Please don't kill it! Bring it back in the summer and show all the episodes starting from Pie-lette and see what happens.

Why! Why! Why??
This was one of the few shows on TV that I raced home to watch. As another person wrote, it took me away to this wonderful, whimsical world, with its exceptional, colorful set and cast of characters.
Don't take away one of the few programs worth watching ( we are already losing "Boston Legal", another wacky cast of characters we care about).
Can't we start a petition?
I am so sick of the mindless plethora of reality shows. We need this interesting and inventive show.
KEEP IT ON, ABC!!!

It is so rare to have a show this quirky, fun, adorable, hilarious, and well written. This show is brilliant, one of the best on TV right now! It's such a refreshingly different show, wonderfully bright and morbid at the same time, not to mention how awesome all of the characters are.
Maybe it should be moved to a time slot where it's not up against Bones...
Posted by B | November 14, 2008 11:42 PM

I even went out and bought the first season on DVD so that I could get caught up. I know there are plenty of other people like me just discovering this show for the first time. PLEASE don't cancel the absolutely wonderful show.

My wife and I loved the first season and were anxious for the second season. But guess what, we both fell asleep half way through the second season premier. We gave the next week a chance but 15 minutes in we both felt the magic was gone and haven't watched it since. I don't know what happened.
Posted by DisaffectedViewer | November 16, 2008 8:11 PM
please keep the best TV show that has ever hit TV. Every episode is such a work of art, this would be a huge disappointment for me.
They need a way to get people to watch the beginning, so people know what is going on.
Posted by casey | November 16, 2008 10:02 PM
There needs to be an alternative revenue stream to counter the so many stupid decisions these producers/broadcasters make.
Pushing Daisies is a worldwide phenomenon and one of my most favourite shows ever. What are they going to put in its place. Another wallpaper show clogging up the airwaves.
This is getting boring. Maybe we should ditch tv and only stick to the internet.
If Pushing Daisies go, it will be a disgusting day in television.

Well this is just great. Finally, there is a show on tv that isn't all about hoochies, sex and drugs, and they are cancelling it!!! What a crock! How do reality shows stay on tv??? They are terrible. No ones life is interesting enough to watch once a week for an hour, especially and embellished one!!!!!!!!!!! Just goes to show that even ABC would rather keep a slutty appearance, then give people something pleasant to watch.

I'm a faithful watcher and would hate to see the show canceled. Not only is it clever, pretty without being twee, and really well-acted, it's gorgeous and the costume and set designers deserve big kudos. Plus, it's also the only show on ABC that I watch and DVR.
Posted by Genevieve | November 17, 2008 3:02 PM
This is a mistake... Pushing Daisies is by far one of the best shows on TV right now. It really bothers me me when crappy shows stay on the air for years and a clever show like PD is not given a chance.
Posted by Aislinn | November 17, 2008 4:50 PM
DON'T CANCEL THIS SHOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It's the freshest thing going; whimsical, intelligent, fizzy. The fleshing out of the characters and backstories this season has been just what was needed to keep the show percolating in the sophomore season - eventually, the Technicolor murder plotlines will lose their lustre, so it's the people and their journeys that will keep us coming back.
Posted by Amelia | November 17, 2008 5:23 PM
This is my favorite show on TV, followed by Eli Stone. Perhaps I am going to end up a double loser this year if they are both cancelled. Better marketing and a later time slot would improve this show's chances for survival. ABC made a mistake by not rerunning the shows in the summer months and by not ordering more episodes before the last TV season closed. It would be a shame to lose this show.
Posted by Mark | November 18, 2008 2:31 PM
I loved the first season of this show! It was the best ever!! The second season? I can't take anymore of Ned's puppy dog face and his whining!!! Him and Chuck are ruining an otherwise brilliant show. I had such hopes for it! It was the best show since "Wonderfalls", which was cancelled way too soon!!!

No public announcement yet, but rumor has it ABC has officially decided to cancel PD after particularly bad overnight ratings for last night's episode. (What the hell did they expect after preempting it for two consecutive weeks and then not promoting the new episode at all? I'm sure there many fans who assumed the show was already gone.)
This is the most disappointing network cancellation for me since Arrsted Development. (The most disappoing cancellation was Dead Like Me, because I expected that sort of treatment from FOX, but not from Showtime.) I'm pretty much through with all the broadcast networks. Besides PD, I'm down to Lost, House, and The Late Show at this point. Shows like Dexter and Weeds put the network offerings to shame.

Does anyone remember a little show called "Seinfeld"? It took a fews years but evetually it was picked up as a full series and was named the best show on television for four years staight. "Pushing Daisies" is, as most everyone says, intelligent, jocular, and down right entertaining. Let is LIVE!

Breezing through the comments, it's easy to see why the show couldn't find a wider audience. Those who seem to be pleased that the show is ending responded negatively to the superficial sweetness, the glossy look, and twice-over-the-top production design. They couldn't see beyond these elements into PD's existential irony, it's wistful characters, and it's broader sexual innuendo. Another pearl lost in the sludge of swinedom.

Please AMC or SciFi please pick up this show! I agree with all the praise above. This show is one of only 3 I watch. PD, Mad Men, and Battlestar Galactica are the only truly excellent shows on TV. Well written, directed, acted, perfect art direction and costume and set design. The demographic that loves this show are probably the ones who can afford to still BUY anything. You would think Studios and their accountants could figure this out. SAVE PD!!!!!

Is there any way to convince ABC not to cancel -from these blogs it would seem that there are a lot of people who appreciate the different course the writers have taken here and crested somethign whimsical and surreal. There are a lot of us it seems who are really tired of "reality" shows, and formulaic dramas, I have never watcheda reality show - the ads turn me right off. But, Pushing Daisies reminds me of Arrested Development which I have on DVD thankfully. Does anyone rememeber "My World and Welcome To It", based on James Thurber's writings? Definitely quirky, and short-lived, but wonderful - I put these 3 shows in a category far far above the rest of the junk on TV. House is quirky too but in an annoying way, I have stopped watching it. The only things I watch on TV besides the news at dinnertime, are Pushing Daisies and 2 comedy shows in my native Canada - Air Farce and Corner Gas, which are both coming to natural end soon. I ahve nothing to watch now I guess, just my DVDs of Arrested Development. Thanks for letting me sound off.

UNBELIEVABLE!! You finally get a WINNING show, with FANTASTIC characters, FABULOUS CAST!,ORIGINAL and different storyline with fast moving EXTREMELY WITTY dialogue for those of us who aren't brain dead with your stupid 'reality' garbage, and you decide to CANCEL IT?????!!!! -BAD MOVE! PUSHING DAISIES is the best show you've come up with yet! There are still plenty of us out here that need a little humor and mental stimulation. And what a fantastic combination of cast! It's my FAVORITE SHOW! I really don't need more remakes, copycat or generally large breasted based interest shows with NO SUBSTANCE! These are just the ABSOLUTELY **BEST ACTORS** who work so well together! This is REAL ENTERTAINMENT! (And trying to shove us over to 'Chuck' by making 'duplicate image' characters won't work for me-Think We didn't notice??)
**And By The Way...these are **EXCELLENT WRITERS**- worth their WEIGHT in GOLD! Keep them on this...WE WANT MORE!!!!
If ratings seemed lower after the writers strike- think of THIS... You made us wait forever and **NEVER PROMOTED** the RETURN of Pushing Daisies as you did other shows. Your viewers became confused & LOST trying to find out WHEN or IF* you would ever bring it back! (*Just for the record...by reading an old article, is the FIRST I've heard of your Pie Hole trailer! It should've been added to the end or as a commercial attachment during the show*. I would've loved to see that!) DUHHH! *THIS ONE HAS SUSTANCE! What a wonderful escape FROM the true reality!
*And you would DENY US a real conclusion by continuing the saga in a COMIC BOOK???!!! Thanks for NOTHING, ABC! What's wrong with you?
I BEG you to RECONSIDER YOUR VIEWERS! PLEASE??!!
**CONTINUE THIS SHOW!! Dump some of the other really JUNK shows for the mindless kiddies instead!

Just for the record...and to tell you ABC Execs to WAKE UP!... Twees may be great, but the 'Baby boomers' are still a hugely viable market. This show spans the gap over BOTH! It covers the age groups AND the INTELLIGENT!

I LOVE Pushing Daisies and never miss it. It is a delight compared to the other schlock on the tube. The show is imaginative, the look is stunning, certainly different from any other program, and each episode's plot is a surprise. Losing this type of show on "commercial" telivision is one more reason I find myself only viewing shows on the cable channels.

I agree with absolutely everyone above who said that this show should NOT be cancelled. If there is anything to keep this show alive, any option at all, it should be considered. Finally there is a show out there that combines wit and imagination and pure sensory enjoyment, and what? Now it's just being cancelled? Of course, because television reps assume that it's not worth watching because it's not a program centered around some famous-for-doing-nothing celebrity picking their "new best friend" or an internet star finding "love" out of a group of losers who probably have no life anyway. Well, if that's what popular culture has come down to so be it, but there are still those of us out there who do have brain cells left and would like to see this television show continue in an uninterrupted manner.
Bottom line:
Pushing Daisies is a great show and SHOULD NOT BE CANCELLED.

Pushing Daisies deserves to stay on TV. The writers, actors, set deisgners, wardrobe designers, prodcers are all EXCELLENT. The casts works great together.
I am SO sick of shows like Who Wants to be a Millionair and Dancing with the Stars.
ABC DID NOT promote Pushing Daisies enough and when they did they had huge ratings. It wasn't viewrs who killed it it was the network or Disney. It was on random Wednesdays. The writer's stike, the presidential campaign, etc. would hurt any show.
This show was like wathcing a move each week. I was actually proud of ABC for the work they put into it. I know it was an expensive show to make but did they think of other ways to save it before giving it the axe? Moving it to another time, shortening it to a half hour, etc?
There is so much crap on TV. PD needs to be picked up by a cable network who appreciates brilliant shows. Even if Fuller is not interested in producing the show anymore they could find someone else, or maybe he would reconsider.
