It's about time someone said that Facebook and Myspace pages for characters are passe. It's done already. At one point, creators were trying to blur the lines between reality and fiction, but the marketplace "gets it" now -- most of the time such efforts are more insulting to the viewer than immersive, as in, "Oh wow, the character friend me, golly, is this real or fake?"

I actually think that the economy will force brands to move away from branded integrations with anyone but trusted production partners. The fun "social media" budgets will be cut back and they will need to spend more money with fewer people.
