Andy Richter to Rejoin Conan O’Brien as ‘Tonight Show’ Announcer
Andy Richter is reuniting with Conan O’Brien, signing on to serve as announcer for Mr. O’Brien’s new incarnation of “The Tonight Show.”
NBC is expected to announce the decision later today.
Mr. Richter and Mr. O’Brien entered the pop culture landscape together in 1993, with Mr. Richter serving as sidekick to Mr. O’Brien when Mr. O’Brien took over from David Letterman as host of NBC’s “Late Night.” Mr. Richter left “Late Night” in 2000 to focus on acting.
On “Tonight,” Mr. Richter will not be a nightly desk-side presence as he was on “Late Night.” He will, however, participate in both live and pre-taped comedy bits.
“Andy is one of the funniest people I know, and we’ve maintained a close friendship since he left ‘Late Night,’” Mr. O’Brien said. “We have a proven chemistry that will be an incredible asset to ‘The Tonight Show.’”
What’s more, there’s a practical reason for Mr. Richter to join the “Tonight Show” team. “He owes me $300,” Mr. O’Brien said.
Mr. Richter was the last non-musical guest on the final edition of “Late Night With Conan O’Brien” last week.
Since leaving “Late Night,” Mr. Richter has been the lead in two half-hour network comedies, the critically acclaimed “Andy Richter Controls the Universe” and “Andy Barker, P.I.” He also has appeared in feature films “Talladega Nights,” “Blades of Glory,” “Semi-Pro” and “Elf.” He’ll next be seen this summer in the Fox feature “They Came From Upstairs.”
Mr. Richter is represented by CAA and manager Tim Sarkes.
Mr. O’Brien and Mr. Richter will make their “Tonight” debuts on June 1. Jeff Ross is the show’s executive producer.

actually he was in three comedies, you forgot Quintuplets (which hopefully, so did he). Andy Richter Controls the Universe was by far the best though, too bad it was too "quirky" for prime time.

Does this mean Joel Goddard is gone altogether? Wonder what he will do next?

Desperate attempt to build audience. Letterman will finally regain the #1 spot.
Tom
Joel Goddard's oddball persona would not be tame enough for the Tonight Show so he had to go, although I personally found his drunken, Asian male stripper chasing antics to be hilarious.

Joel probably didn't want to move to the West. He isn't exactly a youngin.

I'm happy to see Andy Richter re-joining Conan O'Brian on the Tonight Show. Wonder how the new theme will sound? However, Joel Goddard should remain part of the the new Tonight Show, letting him slip to another network as staff announcer would be NBC's loss. If not the Tonight Show With Conan O'Brian, then have him remain with Late Night and its new host. Its going to need some transition element between O'Brian and the Fallon regime. Joel is just too good to allow him to sit on a shelf or slip away!

Desperate attempt to gain an audience? That's funny since the guy hasn't even taken over the Tonight Show yet. Letterman is a complete snooze.

Lol, Letterman is terrible. Well, he is AWESOME at stuttering/repeating words, but that's about it

I am glad to see this. I was VERY sad to see Andy go. I thought the two of them together made a great team.

Letterman will crush them. Conan has never received decent ratings in primetime. 11:35 will be no different.
Put more simply, NBC hasn't made a good move in years. This will be more of the same.
Mike Beckham
11.35 isn't Primetime, and on NBC's moves they have been #1 in Late Night since 1996 so I think they have the upper hand. Not only that Letterman skews old, Conan skews young - big up for NBC there.

@Karen
Joel has his hands full with his young asian friends...he'll keep busy

You don't suppose because of this development, Goddard could be the Announcer for Jimmy Fallon next?
Late Night Fan
That's a good point. Conan has never been successful outside of 12:30. His primetime specials tanked. And Richter as announcer???? He has a squeaky voice that will make Stuttering John look good. Can't wait for Dave to regain his throne esp with the increasing CBS lead-in.

Nup Jimmy already has an announcer.

Late Night with Conan was much better with Andy Richter on for Conan to do skits and banter with. After Andy left it was not the same entertaining show. Conan was overworked. Andy seemed the perfect Ed McMahon to Conan. I wish the best for Conan and Andy. Why did Andy leave in the first place?
Revrant
Yes he has, his Emmy performances and hosting were praised up and down, Conan's(only) prime time appearances were great and attracted large audiences.
Joel is 71 years old, I doubt he was fired, it's more likely that he doesn't want to leave his family, who are likely nearing great grand children at this point in his life.
I doubt he'll be leaving NBC, he is one of their more regular announcers for special events and has been for many years.
I love Andy, but we'll have to see how his voice transitions to the role of announcer, all the same it will be great to have him back with Conan.
Oh, and Conan has dominated the late night slots, simply dominated them, it was huge news when Craig(also hilarious) managed to(with deceptive ratings) barely top him.
Jimmy
THIS IS GREAT NEWS!
I always wanted Andy to come back.
CONAN AND ANDY MAKE A GREAT TEAM!
YAY!!!!!

People don't watch the Emmys for Conan. And the Emmys go down every year. He is going to have a hard time. Especially when Leno gets the better guests at 10pm and Conan has to settle for leftovers.
Steve
cmon.. cant really be anyone under 60 or that isnt a far left idealist that really finds Letterman remotely funny.
Who knows what conan's new show will bring.. but no question that the synergy with Richter was top notch the first go around.
Daniel
I'm surprised that there's so much Letterman vs Conan going on in the same negative vein as Letterman vs Leno. I've loved all three incarnations of the Late Late Show, but I always felt like Conan was more Letterman-like in terms of sensibilities and humor than any those. I suspect that a handful enthusiastic Conan fans won't see him as much now that they can't switch to him after Letterman, which might help Craig Ferguson.
Steve
What is the deal with referring to Conan as "Mr. O'Brian" and Andy as "Mr. Richter"? That is incredibly annoying. Anyone else agree?
Jake
Conan's move to 11:35 will only truly benefit one man. The switch is a major blessing for Craig Ferguson. I despise Jimmy Fallon, he is probably the worst pick NBC could have made. No one in their right mind is going to watch Fallon when 12:35 comes around, so they will just switch over to Ferguson. I usually watch him when Conan is a repeat. He's actually very funny. The Return of Andy Richter is a ploy to gain more attention to the show and to help Conan ease in to the Tonight Show. Whether it will help Conan against Letterman is a mystery. Conan has to knock the firsts how out of the park or he risks losing many dumb viewers to Letterman.

Andy was great in Cabin Boy with the "Son of Bob" Chris Elliott whose Bedroom was filled in with Cement to keep him from moving back home once he finally left, on a television show that should still be on the air, Get a Life.
Andy was great with Conan when the show was young and fresh. I hope he can freshen it up again.
Late Night with David Letterman quit being funny the day after Dave cut his hair. He's still crying about Johnny giving that upstart Jay Leno "His Job" I'll bet.
The last really funny thing I saw David Letterman do was go on the Peoples Court (Johnny Carson show) and offer Judge Wapner some steaks as a bribe.
Conan and Andy were way funnier to me than David Letterman ever was.
mike
craig ferguson stinks, his jokes are older then he is, and the way he interviews guests is worst then leno! conan is going to shoot to number one at 11:35 and i for one can't wait.
Christopher
Johnny didn't give Leno the Tonight Show job, NBC did--over Johnny's objections. Carson didn't like Leno and always wanted to give the show to Letterman when he left, and in the end NBC gave Letterman one last chance to take it, but Letterman called up Johnny and talked it over with him, and decided it was better for him to take the CBS gig instead. Leno is a weasel and a snake whose career was made by Letterman, and if you read "The Late Shift," you'll see what I'm talking about.

I hate it that Leno is gone..and hate it worse that CONAN will take over the spot...not funny. Childish and immature
batman
i'll miss joel sooooooooo much :(
mike
He was also in the greatest movie ever made..."POOTIE TANG"!!!
Irene
I really didn't care for conan on late night. And I feel David will fare better with ratings now. I just really want to know who his band will be. Will it be Kevin Eubanks and the tonight show band or Max from NY. I truely hope Kevin goes with Jay. I wish if conan bombs Jay will come back.
