'The Simpsons' Extended by Fox

Fox ordered two more seasons of the animated comedy series "The Simpsons," extending the longest-running primetime series in history into its 22nd season.

The News Corp. unit ordered 44 more episodes of the show, which debuted in January 1990 after the Matt Groening-created cartoon was featured as part of Fox's "The Tracey Ullman Show." The series will have aired 493 shows at the end of the extension.

"The Simpsons," which features voice actors including Dan Castellaneta, Harry Shearer and Julie Kavner, has received 24 Emmy Awards as well as a Peabody Award.

The show is produced by Gracie Films and 20th Century Fox Television.

"The Simpsons Movie," based on the show, grossed more than $500 million at the domestic box office receipts in its July 2007 release, according to BoxOfficeMojo.com.
