Video: It’s a Pirate’s Life!
Daisy Whitney's New Media Minute
Media companies could be training consumers to become pirates, Daisy Whitney warns in the latest edition of her New Media Minute. Hulu recently yanked its content from both TV.com and Boxee, a move that might send some consumers over to the dark side to get their TV shows. Daisy shares her advice to Hollywood on how to handle such kerfluffles.
But there are factions of the online video business getting along just fine. The Bay Area Interactive Group, along with media agency McCann WorldGroup, partnered with San Francisco public high school teachers to train them on how to bring blogging, podcasting, online video and social networking into their classrooms. For all the details, watch the New Media Minute.

In a word - Yes. While its not Hulu's fault, Hollywood's protectionist approach right now is already forcing people to find the content they want elsewhere. And there are plenty of options available to consumers.
The broader issue, to me, is one of quality. Lets face it, content from Hulu, Boxee and other web-to-TV providers still can't compete in quality against the HD, or even DVD or broadcast quality that is available from other sources. Being able to download a full broadcast quality sit-com in 5 minutes from any of the illegal torrent sites is a tremendously appealing option vs. watching a lower quality stream.
The movie industry's efforts to curb piracy have had little impact so far - at least from an outsider's perspective. Nearly every movie that is in the theaters is available, and movies that are out on DVD are available in bit-perfect copies.
Online television providers need to figure out a way to attract and keep audiences, rather then sending them searching for what they want in those dark corners of the Web. Look at Hollywood, then do something different.
