Fox Puts 'Fringe' on Thursday, Moves 'Dance' to Fall
Fox is boldly sending J.J. Abrams’ “Fringe” to Thursday nights and shifting “So You Think You Can Dance” into the fall as part of an aggressive fall schedule designed to make the network more competitive in the fourth quarter.
“Fringe” will shift from a protected timeslot behind “American Idol” to Thursdays at 9, the network announced Monday. That will pit the spooky drama against CBS’ “CSI” and ABC’s “Grey’s Anatomy,” barring any decision by CBS or ABC to shake up their own schedules.
In addition, as telegraphed by the network last week, summer reality staple “So You Think You Can Dance” is moving into the regular season with its sixth season. The show will air Tuesday from 8-10 p.m. and Wednesday at 8, mirroring the winter pattern of “American Idol.”
It’s no surprise that Fox will use the Wednesday edition of “Dance” to launch musical comedy “Glee” at 9 p.m. But it’s interesting to see “Dance” stay at two hours on Tuesdays.
Many had expected Fox to slot a new show Tuesdays at 9 behind “Dance.” It’s always possible the network could change its mind and do just that.
Also of note: Fox will again try comedy on Friday nights, slotting new half-hour “Brothers” at 8, in front of “’Til Death” at 8:30 and “Dollhouse” at 9. “Death” and “Dollhouse” are being produced at a lower-than-normal cost to Fox, making it easier for the network to keep them on the air.
Fox, as expected, is giving “Lie to Me” some season-two support with a Monday-at-9 timeslot, following “House.”
In keeping with recent years, Fox is saving some big guns for the spring, when “American Idol” and “24” return. This year, the two shows getting the “Idol” love are “Human Target” (Wednesday) and “Past Life” (Tuesday). “Glee” also is slated to return for the second half of its season on Wednesday after “Idol” come spring.
