In light of the Penn State child abuse scandal and Joe Paterno’s firing from the university, the Big Ten Conference has announced that the trophy to be presented at the inaugural conference championship game will not bear Joe Paterno’s name, reports the Los Angeles Times.

The trophy was going to be called the Stagg-Paterno Championship Trophy to honor Paterno and Amos Alonzo Stagg, the former football coach of the University of Chicago.

When the championship game is played Dec. 3 in Indianapolis and the trophy presentation is made, the award will be called the Stagg Championship Trophy.

In a statement, Big Ten Commissioner Jim Delany said, "We believe that it would be inappropriate to keep Joe Paterno’s name on the trophy at this time."

The scandal is focused on a former Paterno assistant, Jerry Sandusky, who has been charged with 40 counts of sexual abuse against children. Sandusky has proclaimed his innocence, as previously reported.
