Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes Working Toward Settlement — But There’s One Key Obstacle

Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes are reportedly trying to work out a peaceful settlement of their divorce, but TMZ.com reports that one thing could be a deal breaker: their daughter, Suri.

TMZ reports: “We’re told Tom has insisted that the settlement provide ‘meaningful, significant contact with his daughter.’ As one source put it, ‘She is the primary concern in his life.’"

Cruise’s involvement with the Church of Scientology has been reported as a point of contention for the couple, with Holmes said to be determined to raise their daughter outside the church. Some reports say Holmes is seeking sole custody of Suri.

The two sides are trying to hammer out an agreement encompassing custody, visitation arrangements and property, the story reports.

TMZ reports: “Lawyers for both sides have been meeting for hours a day. Sources say they even met for a full business day on Saturday. And, we’re told, they are not just trying to hash out a temporary truce — these are settlement negotiations for the entire divorce.”

However, the Suri situation could undermine those negotiations, the report cautions.

A Reuters report adds: “According to her attorneys, Holmes is seeking sole custody of their 6-year-old daughter, Suri, and much speculation has surfaced that Holmes wants to raise the young girl outside the Church of Scientology, of which Cruise is a key member. Cruise flew back to Los Angeles from a film shoot in Iceland early last week, and since then has remained publicly quiet about the divorce. His attorney, Los Angeles-based Bert Fields, has said Cruise wants to remain private.”
