Massachusetts prisons have spent almost $77,000 on new high-definition flat-screen televisions for prison inmates, opting for the new TVs instead of buying converter boxes to prepare for the DTV switch, the Boston Herald reports. The purchase comes as the state prepares to lay off workers and slash local aid given the tough economy, the paper says.
