Oprah Says She Wants to Interview O.J. Simpson. And Wants the Interview on the Condition That ‘He Confesses to Me.’ And Why She Actually Thinks This Could Happen

Oprah Winfrey says she wants to interview O.J. Simpson. Not only does she want to interview him, but she wants to interview him on the condition that he "confesses to me."

Winfrey made her remarks today during the general session at the NCTA Cable Show at the McCormick Convention Center in Chicago. She was interviewed by Discovery’s Paula Zahn.

The question to ask about Oprah’s wish to interview Simpson and get him to confess is why she would think he would ever do such a thing. Simpson was found not guilty by a jury in the 1994 killings of his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and a friend, Ron Goldman.

Winfrey had an answer to that: The same forces in the universe that led a poor girl in Mississippi to become a very successful talk show host will make it possible.

Besides Simpson, Oprah said there was only one other person she’d like to interview that she’s never been able to: Susan Smith, who infamously killed her children and lied about doing so.

Talking about her strugging Oprah WInfrey Network cable channel, which she owns in conjunction with Discovery Communications, she said that now that her syndicated show is over she will focus all of her time and energy on OWN.

When Zahn asked her about her five-year plan for building OWN into a success, Winfrey quickly replied that she’ll do it in three years, adding that she’s an impatient person.

Asked what she might have done differently with OWN so far, she said that she should have concentrated on buiding the network one night at a time, making sure that the viewers knew that was how it was being done.

The vision for the network is to make shows that open a heart space, Oprah said, and make sure that when viewers leave a show they feel better than before they watched it. She said that could be done with both heavy and lighter subjects. She did not reveal any shows the might be in the pipeline that have not already been released.

As for the scrutiny that OWN has been under, Oprah said she hasn’t paid a lot of attention to it. She said she gets press clippings about OWN, but does not read them. She said she doesn’t need others to tell her what needs to be done–that she can watch the shows herself and can see what changes need to be made.

She added that she had always been very hands on with her syndicated show, and that’s the way she’ll now be with programming on OWN.
