In a decision carried live on all the major cable news channels and many broadcast television outlets, Amanda Knox was cleared of murder charges and was freed from prison today in Italy.

Her 26-year sentence for murder was overturned by an appeals court in Perugia, ABC News reports.

Knox has been jailed in Italy for the past four years, since being convicted of the murder of her roommate Meredith Kercher in 2007. She was freed almost immediately after the verdicts were read, USA Today reported.

The ABC News story notes that Knox’s psychological battle is far from over, even as her legal battle ends.

Ann Rosen Spector, a professor of psychology at Rutgers University, commented for the story: "She still has had a horrific experience and her sense of trust in police and in people is gone. Some people may still believe she did it and will treat her differently. Her name is well known. It will take time to get back to normal.”

The story adds: “Her pale face and thinning hair show the toll prison life has taken on the young woman psychologically.”

A lesser charge of slander was upheld against Knox.
