`5th Wheel’ on a roll

Relationship series “The 5th Wheel” has found first gear as the series shifts from stop to go.
After weeks of negotiations and scouting the stations in New York, the country’s top market, Universal Television has cleared the upcoming relationship strip on Fox owned-and-operated WNYW-TV in New York. In addition, Fox affiliates in Pittsburgh and Baltimore will join the 85 percent of the country that has already cleared the show for a fall debut.
The series had already wrapped up KCAL-TV in Los Angeles and WPWR-TV in Chicago to complete the trifecta of the nation’s vital top markets.
A number of strips have had trouble clearing all three of the markets, especially with the Chris-Craft stations laying low on new pickups. In fact, Buena Vista Television’s talk show “Iyanla” is still searching for an L.A. home.
Columbia TriStar Television Distribution has yet to officially announce any major clearances for relationship strip “Shipmates,” although a deal is said to be close to wrapping up for all three markets. Telepictures Distribution’s “Elimidate” has also not announced major market clearances, although station sources confirmed that the series had nabbed WCIU-TV in Chicago.
