Title: President of Aerocast, a streaming media services company that enables secure, high-quality, low-cost distribution of video across the Internet.
Background: Prior to joining Aerocast in June 2000, Mr. Santana was vice president and general manager of Advanced Network Systems, one of five business units that made up Motorola’s Broadband Communications Sector (formerly General Instrument Corp.).
Standing out: “We’re very narrow in our focus-entertainment and video and broadband-enabled homes. But we’re very broad in our solution, meaning we don’t just provide the technology but also go as far as bringing the content to our platform. We feel we have to do that to accelerate the deployment of this technology.”
Projects: “We recently announced an Inktomi relationship. We’re using a streaming software solution that helps us tackle this marketplace with technology. We can leverage then by further developing software that enables intelligent routing and also secure delivery. We use them as a software layer several places in our network. We did a press release with Motorola announcing the work we’re doing with them in this area of security. Prior to that, we announced the Millennium Digital Media trial with their cable operation in Seattle. There we were leveraging their last-mile infrastructure and working with them for proof of concept and technology testing by delivering quality streaming video to their subscribers. We also got lots of feedback from some focus work we did there as well.”
Future: “We are going to be launching commercially in the third quarter of this year and bringing on additional features and capabilities over the following months. So the last half of this year and the first half of next year [will be exciting], not just because we’re bringing solutions to the marketplace that aren’t readily available, but also because the level of interest in streaming is growing rapidly.
