The following chart is from the report titled “Gambling With the Future” conducted by the Project for Excellence in Journalism, a media think tank affiliated with the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism. The study, released Nov. 15, ranked the newscasts of 43 stations in 14 cities over a two-week period and compiled confidential surveys from 118 news directors.
In addition to the evaluations represented on the chart, the surveys revealed that 47 percent of news directors said advertisers try to get newsrooms to run positive stories about them, one in five news directors report sponsors seek to prevent them from airing unfavorable stories, and news directors in small markets are far more likely to feel pressure from advertisers.
