Clinton, NBC meet about more than a talk show

Despite reports that former President Bill Clinton was in talks with NBC about hosting a daytime talk show, both NBC and spokespersons for Mr. Clinton have now confirmed Thursday that although the possibility of a relationship was brought up, discussions were for a number of projects, not just for a talk show.

“In NBC’s ongoing effort to explore new and innovative ways of growing our business, we had an informal meeting [Wednesday] with former President Clinton. A range of ideas was discussed, which included the opportunity of working together,” read a statement form the studio.

President Clinton’s representatives echoed similar sentiments of his Wednesday meeting with NBC staff.

“Yesterday’s informal meeting was one of many meetings President Clinton has had with many people over the past year. President Clinton did not demand a talk show. He went to listen. The president is gratified by the range of opportunities that have been presented to him,” read a statement from Clinton spokeswoman Julia Payne.

Parsons looking to simplify AOL Time Warner structure: AOL Time Warner’s pursuit of a public spin-off of its cable systems would be “a suboptimal outcome” of talks with Advance/Newhouse, AT&T Corp. and Comcast Corp. to restructure their troubled Time Warner Entertainment joint venture, CEO-elect Richard Parsons said Thursday.

Speaking at a Banc of America Securities investors conference in New York, Mr. Parsons reiterated his goal to simplify the media giant’s structure. Sources close to the situation tell Electronic Media that while alternative options to breaking up TWE are being discussed, Comcast has made clear that even in the event of a spin-off, it intends to withdraw from the partnership, which it will inherit when it acquires AT&T Broadband.

Newhouse also is threatening to pull its cable systems out of TWE, which would diminish AOL Time Warner’s cable and broadband reach. AOL Time Warner stock continued to slide beneath $14 a share in midday trading.
