What are they: A range of new lenses for broadcast use that were introduced by Fujinon at the National Association of Broadcasters convention in April.
Professional/high end broadcast production market: The A13X4.5BERM/BERD is the widest lens on the market today for broadcasters, said Dave Waddell, marketing manager for Fujinon’s broadcast and communications products division. This type of lens is used frequently in morning shows for wide shots of guests or where there might be two to three people in the shot and you want a close-up of all of them, he said. The BERD version has servos for both zoom and focus, meaning those functions are controlled electronically. The BERM version has a servo only for zoom. The lenses fit any 2/3-inch format broadcast camera. The product is slated for September availability. The BERM version costs $24,000, and the BERD is $25,750.
Broadcast/smaller-market stations: The A13x6.3E is a wide-angle lens designed for smaller-market stations and the corporate market. It has a less sophisticated servo mechanism than the A13x4.5, which means it can’t do movements as precisely and as slowly, Mr. Waddell said. However, it is designed to handle the rigors of regular 24/7 use by broadcasters for news gathering. The A13x6.3E comes with an extender to double the focal length and costs $9,900. The version without the extender is $6,500. Both lenses are designed for 2/3-inch cameras and should be available in September.
High-definition market: Fujinon introduced four new versions of its high-definition lenses. The HA13x4.5BERM/BERD essentially has the same functionality as the A13x4.5BERM/BERD, but it operates in high definition. The HA22x7.8BERM/BERD is a telephoto lens with a longer focal length and is designed for news or sidelines sports. It features a 22x zoom. The lenses are targeted to any station broadcasting in high-definition and will be available in September. The HA13x4.5BERM costs $29,900, while the HA13x4.5BERD costs $31,650. The HA22x7.8BERM costs $33,000, and the HA22x7.8BERD costs $34,750.
