Title: President, advertising sales, Universal Television
Recent interesting deal: “The deal I made with USA Networks, now Universal Television. Within a three-month period, I left NBC, the No. 1 network, where I sold the Olympics, their No. 1 event, to simultaneously restructure the sales forces of the USA Network, The Sci-Fi Channel and Trio, in order to position them competitively in time for this year’s upfront.”
The next big thing: “Basic cable as an original programming force on the television landscape. Here at Universal Television, with shows like USA’s `Dead Zone’ and `Monk’ or Sci-Fi’s `Farscape’ and `Taken,’ the upcoming mega-miniseries from Steven Spielberg, we’re delivering true destination viewing, bridging the gap between broadcast television and what’s traditionally been expected from basic cable.”
Is there anything you wish you had sold less of? “’Dead Zone’ and `Monk,’ which both debuted to record-breaking ratings after we had already done the upfront.”
Is there anything you wish you had sold more of? “I wish I’d sold more of my GE stock before the market went south.”
If you weren’t in media selling: “I grew up in television. My dad was a director and my mom was an actress. So I guess if I hadn’t ended up on the business side, I would have pursued directing. Or I could have continued on my previous career path as an ocean lifeguard. Surfing, tanning and working out all day sounds pretty appealing.”
