Title: Senior VP, national ad sales, Discovery Networks, U.S.
Recent interesting deal: “Two recent deals stand out. The first was the cross-platform partnership with Procter & Gamble and MediaVest across several Discovery properties, including the Discovery Channel, TLC, Animal Planet, the Travel Channel, Discovery Health Channel, Discovery Kids Channel, Discovery Home & Leisure Channel and BBC America.
“Whether it’s the Swiffer cleaning system and TLC’s `Trading Spaces’ or Puffs tissues/Cover Girl and Discovery Health’s `Berman & Berman: For Women Only’ series, there are a number of organic, smart ways to integrate P&G products across our brands.
“The second deal is our recent partnership with GM for the Discovery Channel’s `Quest’ series. GM’s partnership with us spans five Discovery Channel `Quest’ programming events, starting in December with `James Cameron’s Expedition Bismarck.’ A broad on-air commitment includes special tagged vignettes that showcase mini-profiles of Discovery Channel `Quest’ scholars, vignettes that explain the `Quest’ mission and other behind-the-scenes programming breaks. GM also receives exclusive logo identification in all tune-in print advertising, exposure on `Quest’ in-flight programming on select United Airlines domestic flights and exposure in Discovery Channel retail stores.
Next big thing: “More cross-platform deals and learning how to co-exist with the growing technology of PVRs/TiVo, interactive TV and video-on-demand.
Anything you wish you had sold less of: “I wish I’d sold less of TLC daytime in the upfront, because in the current marketplace it’s worth gold.”
Anything you wish you had sold more of: “Discovery’s newer, targeted networks-The Science Channel, Discovery Civilization Channel, Discovery Home & Leisure Channel, Discovery Wings Channel. I wish the buying community embraced these networks more, since they are highly appealing to upscale enthusiast viewers and are on a growth track to become major networks.”
If you weren’t in media sales: “If not in sales, then I would have been a producer or director. But if not in television, I wish I were talented enough to be a professional drummer.”
