Award-winning entertainment journalist Alex Ben Block has been appointed editor of Electronic Media.
Mr. Block, who has served as editor of The Hollywood Reporter and associate editor at Forbes Magazine, will join the team at EM on Jan. 6. He will report to Chuck Ross, EM’s publisher and editorial director.
“I’ve known Alex for almost 20 years,” Mr. Ross said. “Though we’ve never worked together before, Alex has always struck me as the quintessential newsman. He’s one of the smartest, sharpest journalist’s I’ve ever met, and he knows our business like the back of his hand. He’ll make a great fit here at EM.”
Mr. Block is author of the nonfiction book “Outfoxed: The Inside Story of America’s Fourth Network,” which chronicled the tumultuous birth of Fox Broadcasting, including the battles among Barry Diller, Marvin Davis and Rupert Murdoch.
For the past two years Mr. Block has been executive director of the Los Angeles Press Club as well as editor in chief of Hollywood Star News. He is also a regular contributor to “Call Sheet,” a weekly independent look at the entertainment business on KPCC-FM, a major National Public Radio outlet in Los Angeles. He will continue with that program.
“I am excited about the opportunity to work with a great group of journalists at EM and at Crain Communications,” Mr. Block said. “Television is a central dynamic in our society. It is an exciting challenge to find ways to serve the broadcast and cable community even more effectively, and open up the back door to show how it is all done. All of the skills I have gained as a writer, investigative reporter, TV and radio broadcaster, production artist, show business historian and author will be of value in this new position.”
Mr. Block was editor of The Hollywood Reporter for seven years-1992 to 1998-holding that title longer than anyone in The Reporter’s history.
A native of Syracuse, N.Y., and graduate of Ithaca College, Mr. Block began his career at Forbes Magazine in New York and worked for Forbes again during the mid-1980s in Los Angeles. He has been entertainment editor and movie critic for the Miami News, columnist and critic at The Detroit News, columnist and city editor for the Los Angeles Herald Examiner and movie critic for KGIL-AM in Los Angeles.
Mr. Block lives in Encino, Calif., with his wife, actress and producer Jodi Taylor, and is the father of actress, musician and artist Hayley Taylor-Block.
