Title: Ethan Dreilinger, executive producer, News 12 Interactive. He is responsible for the daily editorial content for the interactive platforms of News 12, Cablevision’s 24-hour news station serving Long Island, New Jersey, Westchester, Connecticut and the Bronx.
Background: Mr. Dreilinger has been with News 12 for two years and previously worked for CBS in Boston, CBS affiliate KTVT-TV in Dallas and ABC’s NewsOne in New York.
Always on deadline: News 12 Interactive is responsible for all the interactive platforms for the News 12 networks, which include the scroll at the bottom of the TV screen, the Web site and the Interactive Optimum product, a virtual channel on Interactive Optimum, Cablevision’s digital cable offering. “For the Web site and IO we have an on-demand offering that gives viewers the ability to get away from the schedule and get news whenever they want,” he said. “So we need to get [news] instantly available on the Web site and IO. We are on a constant deadline.”
Interactive in action: In mid-November, the station’s coverage of a contested congressional race in Suffolk County, Long Island, illustrated those split-second deadlines. When the station learned around 11 a.m. that the incumbent candidate was going to concede, it published a text story on the Web site, the IO channel and the scroll bar. News 12 then carried the live press conference on the IO channel and updated the scroll bar, the IO channel and the Web site during the event. The station offered the entire press conference on-demand on the virtual channel later in the day. This flurry of interactive activity occurred during a three-hour span and well before the news led the 5 p.m. update on News 12, Mr. Dreilinger said.
Cutting-edge newsroom: The staff of News 12 Interactive was recently reduced from 50 to 11 due to budget reductions at Cablevision. The station relies more on technology and operating efficiencies, such as Web publishing tools from Vignette, to upload material online, Mr. Dreilinger said. The heart of the digital newsroom is the transcoding hardware/software platform from Front Porch Digital that allows News 12 to easily convert digital files into other digital files for publishing in its series of interactive platforms, he said. “It does it very quickly and efficiently and can do multiple files simultaneously,” he said.
