CNN dominated the news coverage of the crash of the space shuttle Columbia. According to data from Nielsen Media Research, CNN averaged 1.854 million viewers for total day Saturday, Feb. 1, 1.972 million in prime time Saturday, 1.048 million for total day Sunday, Feb. 2, and 1.331 in prime time Sunday. Fox News Channel finished behind CNN, averaging 1.765 million viewers for total day Saturday, 1.321 million in prime time Saturday, 915,000 for total day Sunday and 895,000 in prime time Sunday. According to preliminary Nielsen data provided by NBC News, NBC-affiliated stations were the leading broadcast choice for news about the Columbia crash during the day Saturday.
