Fox reality sweep

After two weeks of sweeps, NBC continues to hang in there in the adults 18 to 49 race despite not having a monster reality hit such as Fox’s “American Idol” or ABC’s “The Bachelorette” to drive young adult ratings.
Fox has a 5.1 Nielsen Media Research rating and 13 share, compared with NBC’s second-place 5.0/13.
“American Idol” and “Joe Millionaire” continue to light up Fox’s schedule with dominating first-place time period finishes in the demo.
The penultimate episode of Fox’s “Joe Millionaire” last week scored a 12.9/28 in adults 18 to 49 and 23.9 million viewers-even though it annoyed numerous fans who felt cheated because the show did not reveal the winner and was essentially a clip show.
“Millionaire” had its best ratings ever in adults 18 to 49 and total viewers and gave Fox its best numbers ever in both categories in the 9 p.m.-to-10 p.m. Monday time slot. It was also Fox’s highest-rated Monday night in the demo in seven years.
“American Idol” continued to buoy Fox’s Tuesday lineup with a 9.7/25 in the demo and Wednesday lineup with a 9/23. Excluding Super Bowl numbers from last February sweeps, Fox is up in double-digit percentages in demos across the board.
NBC has relied on the scripted strength of its Thursday lineup with “Friends,” a “Friends” repeat and “ER” taking three of the top five adults 18 to 49 slots for the week.
ABC has seen growth in all the young demos thanks to strong performances by “The Bachelorette,” the “Celebrity Mole” finale and the “20/20: Living With Michael Jackson” special.
“20/20: Living With Michael Jackson,” for which ABC reportedly paid $4 million to $5 million for the rights to the Granada documentary, gave ABC its first Thursday night sweeps victory in adults 18 to 49 in over a decade. The two-hour special scored an 11/25 among adults 18 to 49, beating out NBC’s sitcom lineup (9.0/21) and CBS’s “Star Search”/ “CSI” combo (6.7/15). From 8 p.m. to 10 p.m., ABC averaged 27.1 million viewers, compared with 19.6 million for CBS and 18.5 million for NBC.
Monday blues for ABC
“The Bachelorette: The Men Tell All” reunion special scored a time-period winning 8.3/20 in adults 18 to 49 last week and 17.3 million viewers. The finale of “Celebrity Mole” also did well, with a 6.0/16 in the demo and 12.3 million viewers.
However, ABC’s new Monday night lineup of “Veritas,” “The Practice” and “Miracles” continued to disappoint and fell to its lowest numbers yet last week. ABC averaged a 2.4 rating and 6 share among adults 18 to 49 and 6.8 million total viewers for the night – beaten even by The WB, whose lineup scored a 2.8/7 and 7.5 million viewers. Monday night stalwart “7th Heaven” saw its best numbers of the season with a 3.5/9 in the demo and 9.3 million viewers.
The WB is pacing double-digits ahead of the first two weeks of sweep last year in all 18 to 34, 12 to 34 and 18 to 49 demos.
CBS leads in the total viewers (12.9 million) and households (8.5/13) races ahead of second-place NBC (12.6 million and 8.3/13 in adults 18 to 49). CBS is up across the board in all demos.
UPN is pacing last in adults 18 to 49 and total viewers and is down double-digits in demos across the board.
