The birds are grounded

Last week, hundreds of guests were invited to enter Warner Bros.’ back lot through iron gates, part of a re-creation of the set from The Thorn Birds, the second-highest-rated miniseries in TV history. They would also view artifacts such as the “ashes of rose” dress, which when worn signaled that Meggie Cleary, played by Rachel Ward, had “become a woman.” The (estimated) $1 million party was tied to the 20th anniversary rerelease of the 10-hour mini series, which won five Emmys. But only days before the chafing dishes were to be set out last week, the fete was canceled because of the war and the difficulty of flying in guests such as Ms. Ward, from Australia. So for all who missed the party, you will have to settle for this photograph or catch the show on The Hallmark Channel.
