He’s big and bald, a former Marine and a current Chicago police officer, but since 1994 “Big” Steve Wilkos has been best known as head of security for the “Jerry Springer Show,” where he frequently has to break up fights and separate crazed guests. Jerry Springer may soon be looking for a new off-duty cop to be his guardian angel. “Big Steve” is in talks to do a show of his own. Universal TV is developing a five-day-a-week syndicated strip for possible launch in the fall of 2004. It is not a done deal, but if it goes, a source said that current thinking is to have Mr. Wilkos “travel around the country helping people.” He certainly has plenty of experience on the mean streets. In Chicago Mr. Wilkos has regularly patrolled the gang-infested Shakespeare district on the 4 p.m.-to-midnight shift, leaving his days free to keep Mr. Springer out of harm’s way. A Universal spokesman would not comment on the project.
