Executive producer Rob Silverstein continues to find new ways to use “Access Hollywood’s” brand.
This Thursday “Access” and prime-time NBC newsmagazine “Dateline NBC” offer a synergistic display of two of NBC’s news resources when the two shows combine for an hour-long broadcast featuring an interview with “Gigli” stars Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez. In addition, “Access” host Pat O’Brien will appear on the “Today” show Thursday and Friday, when elements of the interview will air.
“This is one-stop shopping for studios,” said “Access” executive producer Rob Silverstein. “Combining the broadcast power of `Access Hollywood,’ `Dateline NBC’ and `Today,’ it’s a natural fit to be able to help the network with this type of entertainment programming. After all, we own film and celebrities trust us, so the opportunity to combine our strengths is really a perfect marriage.”
One catalyst for the union was last year’s “Access” interview with rapper Eminem, whose film then opened at $50 million. “Dateline” then re-edited the interview to appear on its broadcast. The hour-long Affleck/Lopez piece will be the first longer-format collaboration between the two.
“We had been working with the `Access’ folks all season, looking for stories that are of interest to both of us,” said David Corvo, executive producer of “Dateline NBC.” “After Eminem, we asked Pat to do an interview with `American Idol’ winner Kelly Clarkson. We both wanted Ben and J.Lo, who will appear together for an interview for the first time, and we made it happen. We have the production experience to do hour-long network shows, while `Access’ has celebrity connections.”
The “Access” brand has explored new venues in recent months. Mr. Silverstein previously confirmed that a tween version of “Access” showcasing teenage TV and movie celebrities, is set for the Noggin kids channel in the fall. A series on The Game Show Network is a possibility, according to sources, and other spinoffs are being discussed.
In addition, “Access” will host the pre-show for sports awards ceremony The ESPYs on ESPN.
