Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer started a buzz last week when he grandly announced in a CTAM general session that Comcast will do a trial of Microsoft TV’s new interactive programming guide in the software giant’s home turf of Seattle. The news made national headlines and left the impression that Microsoft will soon invade Seattle with its new software, which is an alternative to the Gemstar TV Guide system. But insiders point out that the trial will only be among a small number of Comcast subscribers. How small? “It’s a significantly smaller portion of the [total number of subscribers],” said a Comcast spokesperson. Both Comcast and Microsoft refused to release exact numbers or to comment on a rumor that the trial actually only involves a handful of Microsoft employees.
