Amid reports that NBC executives hope to be able to make an announcement later this week to TV critics, it appears that the long-rumored spinoff of “Friends” starring Matt LeBlanc is very close to being a done deal. The negotiations have been sped up so NBC could announce the deal during its Press Tour presentations July 24 and 25, but sources said things could take longer than that. The new half-hour comedy would feature Mr. LeBlanc’s character, actor Joey Tribbiani, but creative details still have to be worked out. Also unknown is whether Mr. LeBlanc, who was nominated for an Emmy last week, would still command his $1 million an episode salary to carry the new show. Warner Bros. and NBC declined to comment.
Maybe They Should Call it `Friend’
