It may be top rated among syndicated shows, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be freshened up. When “Wheel of Fortune” viewers tune in to the start of the game show’s 21st season on Monday, Sept. 8, they’ll get a glimpse at the set’s first face-lift since the puzzle board was changed to a touch-screen in 1997. Some $500,000 was spent on a makeover that includes a high-definition video screen behind the contestants and custom-built, computer-controlled lighting that is capable of emitting 1.5 million different colors, according to producers. The digital LED lighting products used on the base of the wheel and around the puzzle board are from Color Kinetics; they have traditionally been used for architectural lighting. The video wall will feature scenes from around the world, often tied to themes of the week.
