12 Shows With Buzz

It’s all about the buzz.
A show may be launched with a lot of noise through publicity, marketing and promotion, but it has buzz only when its reputation is enhanced through critical acclaim and word of mouth among friends, around the office water cooler, at parties and on the street.
There was a time in the not-too-distant past when buzz shows were most likely to originate on one of the major broadcast networks. Today, they may just as readily come from one of the burgeoning number of cable TV networks, which are presenting an increasingly diverse range of original programming.
This special report celebrates a dozen regularly scheduled entertainment TV series launched on basic cable during 2003. To be included, each show had to air in prime time. Although it may not top the ratings, each selection has enjoyed greater viewership than is typical for the time slot on its network or has significantly bolstered the profile of its home network. The selection criteria ruled out news, sports, children’s and informational programs.
This list, selected by a consensus of the editors and reporters at TelevisonWeek, may not be large enough to include all of the outstanding shows on cable, but we believe it represents the medium well.
