Cablevision Chairman and cable TV pioneer Charles Dolan, who is moving into satellite distribution with his new Voom service, will be one of the executives featured at the Satellite Broadcast & Communications Association’s 20th Biannual Sky Forum on Thursday in New York City. The full-day program includes interviews with current satellite toppers Charles Ergen of EchoStar and Eddy Hartenstein of DirecTV.
Why They Want Their MTV
“The Normal Rules Do Not Apply: The Evolution of MTV’s Editing Style and Its Impact on Society” is the title of a panel discussion Thursday at the TV Academy in North Hollywood, Calif. The focus is on the way MTV’s visual language has influenced TV programming for the past two decades. Panelists include producer/directors Jon Avnet (“Uprising,” “Boomtown”), Scott Brazil (“The Shield”), Jon Cassar (“24”) and Spike Jones Jr.
Sweeps Schedules Set
During the November ratings sweeps-which kicks off Thursday, Oct. 30, and continues through Wednesday, Nov. 26-Fox will roll out the rest of its new fall fare, including new shows “Tru Calling” and “Arrested Development.” Also on tap for the sweeps is a barrage of original long-forms, including NBC’s take on Jessica Lynch on Sunday, Nov. 9; CBS’s Elizabeth Smart telepic on Nov. 9; and CBS’s miniseries “The Reagans.” Also, the first new episodes of ABC’s “8 Simple Rules” filmed after the death of star John Ritter will air Tuesday, Nov. 4. Among the shows that have been pulled for the sweeps: CBS’s “The Brotherhood of Poland, N.H.,” which has been canceled.
