The Ford van loaded with broadcast equipment and a microwave transmission system that burst into flames during the recent wildfires near Lake Arrowhead, Calif., only minutes after KNBC-TV reporter Chuck Henry and cameraman Christopher Li escaped is going to cost between $200,000 and $300,000 to replace, according to industry sources. A major chunk of that cost will hit GE and NBC’s station group. NBC, like many big corporations, self-insures some or all of the cost of big-ticket items lost under catastrophic circumstances to keep the huge insurance bills under control. In this case, sources said, KNBC was self-insured for the deductible but did have an insurance policy to cover the rest of the cost.
