Scripps Networks will provide a record 51 video-on-demand holiday-themed titles to cable operators from the beginning of November through the first weeks of January as part of its regular VOD release of 150 titles.
The breakdown of holiday-related material by network shows Food Network with 19 titles; Home and Garden Television with 17; Do It Yourself with nine and Fine Living with six. Programming consists of compilations and regular programs. Among the seven holiday compilations, are shows on ornaments, gift wrapping and holiday gifts.
Scripps will provide the programming to cable operators in 58 markets, including Time Warner and Comcast systems as well as Brighthouse and two other small cable systems.
Scripps is selling exclusive advertising with its VOD product. Channing Dawson, senior VP, Scripps Networks New Ventures, said the company is using VOD “as a laboratory for new advertising.
Among its first VOD sponsors are Kraft and General Motors. Home Depot, which participated last year, is expected to return this holiday season, said Mr. Dawson, who will make the sales presentation.
While VOD is a hot subject, Mr. Dawson admitted one major hurdle holding back its growth is the lack of distribution. “We’re waiting for distribution to reach the national level. Not all cable operators offer on-demand products.”
