`Brini’ Boggles Critics’ Minds

Over the years E! Networks has introduced TV critics to a dazed Anna Nicole Smith and the odd, Johnny Carson-obsessed Michael Essany. Last week in L.A. the panel promoting the upcoming “The Brini Maxwell Show” appeared to flummox the critics as never before. The writers practically wore through their shoes dancing around the elephant in the room-the fact that the star of the upcoming Style Network series is a man dressed as a retro homemaker who gives helpful household tips. “Brini” appeared in character, alongside soap star Finola Hughes, who will host another upcoming Style show, “How Do I Look?” Ms./Mr. Maxwell offered ladylike, cleverly worded answers to euphemized questions seemingly aimed at getting her to reveal her true identity. She was even asked whether Doris Day or RuPaul is more of a role model. Finally, it seemed one critic had mustered the guts to come right out and ask her about her sex-but narrowly missed. He instead asked Ms. Hughes: “Finola, can you address rumors that you’re actually a man?”
