Up until now, Carolyn Strauss acknowledges, she has been extraordinarily fortunate. She arrived at HBO at a time when the network aimed to create ambitious original programming. “The Sopranos,” “Sex and the City,” “Six Feet Under” and “Curb Your Enthusiasm” rolled off the assembly line, a string of hits that justified the premium channel’s slogan: “It’s not TV. It’s HBO.”
