Growth Spurt at Nickelodeon

If you spot some shadowy characters lurking around Nickelodeon Animation Studio in Burbank, please don’t confront them with a razor-just wish them luck. They’ve agreed to stop shaving for two weeks as part of the company’s Beardelodeon. As of late last week, 13 competitors, including storyboard artists, color stylists and mailroom staffers, had signed on to compete. Three “fabulous prizes” are at stake for the categories of Mr. Length, Mr. Density and the “coveted Mr. Babyface,” according to a flier posted at the facility. Beard growers checked in with the volunteer judges last Friday to have their “smoothness” inspected. Final beard judging takes place Feb. 27 in the studio’s courtyard. Kenny Pittenger, a storyboard artist for Nickelodeon’s “SpongeBob SquarePants,” started the contest in 1999, and it has been held most years since. Last year’s winners were all from the Nickelodeon show “Fairly OddParents.” They were color stylist Honore Gau-thier (Mr. Density), character designer John Seymore (Mr. Length) and project coordinator Ken Mu (Babyface).
