On the heels of the closure of The Western Show, the CTAM Digital & Broadband Conference will fold into the annual CTAM Summit, the CTAM board of directors I during last week’s conference.
“It makes sense for us to include digital cable and broadband product marketing as part of a bigger, more comprehensive CTAM Summit,” said CTAM President and CEO Char Beales. “In addition, we believe that CTAM members will be better served and educated with one all-inclusive annual conference.”
The first installment of CTAM’s product-specific conference was held in 1990. This year, the conference attracted about 1,400 attendees.
Exec Issues Piracy Warning
Citing the decline of record companies as a harbinger of potential cable industry disaster, Fox Filmed Entertainment Chairman Jim Gianopulos warned operators and hardware vendors at the CTAM conference against creating new platforms that foster piracy.
“We’re in the fight together or going off the cliff together,” he said. “We provide the content, you provide the services, and they’re stealing our movies-but they’re also stealing your bandwidth and your investments in your future. We must give consumers a lot of choice, but not the choice to steal.”
Mr. Gianopulos voiced enthusiasm for video-on-demand services, saying there is “no greater example of giving consumers choice and control” than VOD.
Starz to Launch HD Net
Starz Encore will launch a high-definition network March 22, the company announced. The network will be carried on Rainbow’s Voom HD service and will feature first-run movies.
In other Starz news, cable marketing veteran Jerry Maglio has been named executive VP of marketing for Starz Encore. Mr. Maglio previously served as a marketing executive with American Television & Communications (now Time Warner Cable), Daniels & Associates and United Artists Cable.
TV Guide Pilot Program
TV Guide Interactive will launch a multiple system operator pilot program for its new iGuide program. Beginning this week, the program will allow cable operators to test iGuide through alpha and beta testing before initial deployment.
