SquarePants Has Got Game

GSN, formerly Game Show Network, is looking for younger viewers. But little did it know it had hooked a kiddie favorite when it chose a new announcer recently from among dozens of taped auditions. The voice belonged to Tom Kenny, said Dena Kaplan, GSN’s senior VP, marketing. He’s familiar to millions of children as the voice of SpongeBob SquarePants. Mr. Kenny, a standup comic, has also provided the voice of Dog in “CatDog,” as well as characters on “Powerpuff Girls,” “Rocko’s Modern Life” and “Xiaolin Showdown.” GSN really isn’t looking to appeal to viewers that young. Ms. Kaplan said Mr. Kenny got the nod because “he has a tremendous range,” exudes “young and energetic” and, ironically, sounds “more conversational and less like a game show announcer.” Ms. Kaplan doesn’t think viewers will recognize anything spongy in GSN’s relaunch IDs and “Gimme Games” promos that will break March 15, but viewers from Bikini Bottom are welcome to tune in.
