NBC and Sports Illustrated have announced the early 2005 launch of a reality series based on the magazine’s famed swimsuit issue. “The Sports Illustrated Fresh Faces Competition” will take a group of unknown models to live in Los Angeles, where they will compete for a shot at a million-dollar modeling contract from Next Model Management.

The six-episode series culminates with the final two contestants being flown to an exotic location to shoot a photo spread for Sports Illustrated. The winner will be announced during the series finale in February after viewers vote on their favorite model. The show is being produced by Pariah Television, PB&J Television and Sports Illustrated. Gavin Polone, Patty Ivins, Julie Pizzi, Terry McDonell and Sports Illustrated’s Roy Johnson are executive producers. Jessika Borsiczky serves as producer along with co-producer Jonathan Frank for Pariah.

“Our goal every step of the way was to make a show that would focus on the young women’s personalities and stories and really illustrate how the chance to be in the Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue could change their entire lives,” Mr. Frank said in a statement from NBC.

The show is already being compared with UPN’s reality hit “America’s Next Top Model,” which returns for its third season Sept. 22.
