Nielsen Carries on in Hurricane’s Path

It was not business as usual Friday at Nielsen Media Research’s campus in Dunedin, Fla., in the path of Hurricane Charley and its 145 m.p.h winds. The Nielsen campus just north of St. Petersburg had battened down the hatches Thursday and was closed except for a skeleton crew, but those volunteers produced local and fast national TV ratings on schedule Friday morning.

“We will keep you aware of the situation and any impact the hurricane might have on our ability to produce audience estimates throughout the weekend,” Nielsen said in an advisory Friday morning. Nielsen Media Research began notifying clients Thursday, when public safety officials ordered the mandatory evacuation of some 700,000 people from low-lying coastal areas in the Tampa Bay area that includes Nielsen’s campus.

The Dunedin campus includes a hurricane-protected building that opened in October 2003. However, pending completion of the second phase of construction, some Nielsen employees still work in older structures.
