Olympics Closing Ceremonies a Big Win for NBC

According to Nielsen Media Research, NBC’s Sunday night airing of the Athens Summer Olympic Games’ closing ceremony was another ratings gold medal.

In the Nielsen fast nationals NBC garnered an 11.9 rating and 19 share from 7:30-11 p.m. among households, a 5.6 rating and 15 share among adults 18 to 49 and a total viewership number of 19.4 million. In the adults 18 to 49 demo, the Athens closing ceremonies were up 2 percent (5.6/15 vs. 5.5/14) from the closing ceremonies in Sydney in 2000.

NBC has been touting its overall Olympics numbers. Through day 16 of the games, coverage of the 2004 Athens Olympics on all the NBC networks attracted 200 million total, unduplicated viewers. That surpasses total viewership for Sydney in 2000 (185 million) and marks a 9 percent gain on Sydney’s 183 million viewers through day 16.

NBC’s 16-day prime-time average of 24.9 million viewers is up 14 percent from Sydney’s 21.8 million. NBC’s Athens telecasts have averaged a 15.2 national rating/27 share, up 9 percent over Sydney’s 14.0/25 through day 16.
