BET founder and CEO Robert Johnson has offered special half-hour interview editions of “BET Nightly News” to both President Bush and his Democratic challenger, Sen. John Kerry.

“It’s time that both candidates send a true signal of seriousness to African American voters that our issues, opinions and, ultimately, our votes really matter,” Mr. Johnson said in a statement accompanying the announcement of BET’s offer. “There is little doubt in anyone’s mind that African Americans have the power to decide the outcome of this election. Here is a chance for President Bush and Sen. Kerry to speak directly to our people.”

BET said that if the candidates accept the offer, the format for the prime-time interviews will be determined with input from the candidates and their political parties.
