Executive recruiting firm Heidrick & Struggles on Monday was tapped by The Walt Disney Co.’s board of directors to assist the search for the company’s next CEO, who is slated to be named by next June.

In naming Heidrick as its search firm, the Disney board is making good on a commitment made in September, when CEO Michael Eisner announced he would retire from the company upon the expiration of his employment contract in September 2006. The board has said it will name Mr. Eisner’s successor by June 2005.

One candidate certainly to be vetted will be Robert Iger, Disney’s president and chief operating officer, who is the only internal candidate the Disney board has identified as being in line for the CEO position.
