Mark Mays, the Clear Channel Communications executive who last spring was named interim CEO, late Wednesday was named president and CEO of the broadcasting giant.

The appointment formalizes a role Mr. Mays has held since May 7, when he was tapped to fill in for his father, Chairman and CEO L. Lowry Mays, who had to undergo surgery to treat a blood clot and swelling in his brain and would need time to recover afterward.

Lowry Mays will remain chairman of the San Antonio-based company, which has 1,200 radio stations and owns or programs 39 television stations.
