Oct. 8 Debate Draws 47.7 Million Viewers

The second of three presidential debates on Oct. 8 was seen by an estimated 47.7 million people on ABC, CBS, Fox, NBC CNN, Fox News Channel and MSNBC, according to data from Nielsen Media Research. That’s up considerably from the comparable debate in 2000, which was seen by 37.6 million viewers.

During the 90-plus-minutes debate, NBC was the leading broadcast network choice with 12.3 million viewers, followed by ABC (10.3 million), CBS (8.1 million) and Fox (3.8 million).

Fox News Channel’s debate audience was 7.1 million-only 1 million behind CBS’s viewership. CNN’s audience numbered 3.4 million, while MSNBC attracted 1.7 million.

For post-debate analysis, NBC led with 10.6 million, followed by ABC (8.6 million). CBS post-debate numbers were not available by late Monday.

Fox News Channel attracted 6.7 million viewers for its analysis immediately following the debate, followed by CNN (3.6 million) and MSNBC (2.2 million).
