Mike McCarthy resigned Thursday as president of MSG Network, effective at the end of the year. Last month the network lost the rights to New York Mets baseball games, two seasons after the departure of the New York Yankees, giving the Cablevision-run company little summer programming for its MSG Network and Fox Sports New York.

The company this week signed a 20-year agreement with the New Jersey Devils of the NHL. Mr. McCarthy, who has accepted a role as a consultant for MSG and will be part of the team that will search for his successor, began his career at MSG Network as a student intern in 1982.
