Chicago interior designer and “The Oprah Winfrey Show” regular Nate Berkus was one of thousands of tourists to Sri Lanka who barely survived the Dec. 26 tsunami.

In phone calls to ABC and CNN, Mr. Berkus said he was vacationing with his friend, photographer Fernando Bengoechea, in Sri Lanka when killer waves hit the beachside hut where they were staying. Mr. Berkus was able to hold on to a telephone pole in the rush of water and get himself to safety, but Mr. Bengoechea is reported as missing.

Tens of thousands of people from the eastern coast of Africa to Indonesia were killed by the tsunami.

Mr. Berkus, the founder of Nate Berkus Associates, has been mentioned as a potential host for his own daytime show. Harpo Productions, which also produces “Oprah,” has been interested in developing for Mr. Berkus.
