Brad Grey, the talent manager whose production company is behind “The Sopranos” on HBO, is expected to become the new head of Paramount Pictures, with a deal to be announced as soon as this week.

According to several press reports, Mr. Grey, 47, was offered the job over the weekend by Viacom co-President and co-Chief Operating Officer Tom Freston and negotiations continued between the two men. A Viacom spokeswoman did not return a call seeking comment.

If a deal comes together, Mr. Grey would replace Sherry Lansing, who announced her plan to retire last year amid a shakeup at the studio that also saw the departure of Viacom Entertainment Group Chairman Jonathan Dolgen more than six months ago.

Mr. Grey would be taking the reins of a studio in need of a hit. Paramount has had a string of misses lately, and Mr. Freston has made it known that reviving the studio’s fortunes is a top priority.
