In the battle for Golden Globes red carpet ratings supremacy, E! declared victory Monday.
E! said its “Live from the Red Carpet” program hosted by Star Jones-Reynolds received a 2.12 household rating in metered markets. TV Guide’s “Joan & Melissa at the Golden Globes” received a 1.03 rating.
But a TV Guide Channel spokesperson noted 1.03 is a record-breaker for a channel that most viewers associate with a programming-guide scroll. Prior to the show, the network’s goal was to achieve a 1.0.
And E!’s show is down 20 percent from last year, when it received a 2.65. E! attributed the decline to the proximity of the NFL playoffs and chose to compare this year’s performance to a similarly scheduled 2003, from which it is up 12 percent.
Critics were divided on the performances. Salon.com’s Heather Havrilesky said Jones won “in a knockout.”
“As irritating as Star Jones can be at times, she makes Joan and Melissa look about as charming as a sack of yams,” she wrote.
New York Post writer Linda Stasi concluded, “Star Jones improved greatly from the Emmys – though not enough to make me give up Rivers.”
